A new version of the Fire TV and Android TV apps is rolling out to a device near you now. This new version has several improvements so be sure to update as soon as it is available for your device.

Common Home Screen Layout

Posted Image

The app now follows the same home screen layout as the web, mobile and Theater apps. Each user can define the order of and what appears in each home screen section and these settings will carry across all of these apps. You can access these settings from any of the supported apps (including this one).

Playback Improvements

The internal Google player used by the app has been updated and improved to provide an even better playback experience and require even less transcoding on the server than before. For stereo setups, the app can now downmix internally so it doesn't have to ask the server to transcode or remux to do this conversion - freeing up your server resources for other tasks.

Stats For Nerds

Posted Image

The popular "stats for nerds" feature is now available in this app. To activate it, use the option in the playback OSD settings menu or long-press the "select" button on your remote. You can also turn it off in the same manner. Display of stats for nerds will be remembered for an entire login session.

Improved Seeking Behavior

It is now much easier to seek further into content quickly. By holding down the seek buttons on your remote, the app will progressively seek faster and faster - allowing you to jump hours ahead if necessary much quicker and easier than before

New Season View

Posted Image

The app now has an improved TV Season view that matches the other apps and provides easier access to information for each of the episodes within the season.

Other Fixes and Enhancements

  • Refresh rate switching will now do a better job of matching rates that are "close"
  • Organize settings into logical sections
  • Include photos and photo albums in search results
  • Update language translations (thanks for community contributions!)
  • Shuffle play entire libraries - you can now use the play button on your remote to shuffle play at the library level
  • Include TV channels in search results
  • Stability improvements

Improved Strm File Playback

In most cases, you'll notice you can now resume video playback from .strm files, and subtitle and audio track switching should be fully supported now.

Then head over to your LDAP plugin configuration and setup the plugin to connect to your LDAP server:

Users are imported from LDAP as they sign into Emby. You can even set the default permissions for imported users:

Emby Blog - Emby for Android TV - Oreo Ready

$

0

Android 8 (Oreo) is in the process of being rolled out on the Nvidia Shield and the Emby for Android TV app now goes with it like a tall glass of milk :).

New Launcher

Oreo brings with it a new launcher on Android TV which allows each individual app to have its own entire row(s) on the device home screen. Emby for Android TV will automatically add one of these rows (called "channels" in Android) to your device home screen the first time it runs under Oreo.

Posted Image

This new channel can be moved to where you want it on the home screen or hidden entirely if you don't want it via the "Customize Channels" button on the device home. It will contain in-progress items, next up TV episodes, latest unwatched movies and other suggestions that allow you to directly get to this content from the Android TV launcher.

Additionally, the app will add two more optional channels that you can enable if you wish (more may come in the future).

Posted Image

These optional channels are:

Next Up TV - If you enable this channel, then your Next Up TV row that usually appears on the Emby home screen will be presented right on the device launcher. Enabling you to quickly get to and watch the next episode in the series you are following. If this channel is enabled on the device, then the default "Suggested" channel will not show next up TV. Instead it will just show other suggested content.

Live TV Shortcuts - If you enable this channel it will give you quick ways to enter your Live TV library for On Now, the Guide and your recordings.

Finally, the new Android TV launcher also provides a special channel called "Play Next". The user can add content from any of the other channels on the device home to this special channel in order to make a kind of "next up queue" across all apps on the device. In addition to being able to add items from the Emby channels, you can also add any video from within the Emby app by using the long-press context menu and selecting "Add to Play Next". Then that item will have a direct shortcut in your Play Next row on the device home.

Other Improvements

In addition to the Oreo updates, other fixes and enhancements included in this release are:

  • Improved playback by updating the internal Google player
  • Support for Theme Songs while browsing (turn on the option under Display Settings)
  • Improved app display when deleting items
  • Faster app start up
  • Improved layout on non-standard Android boxes
  • Support for direct playing Opus audio in mkv
  • Fix selecting wrong resolution on some content with auto refresh rate switching

We hope you enjoy these enhancements and we are already working on the next batch. Thanks!
